Super Mario 64 is a game that has garnered quite the reputation in the horror community. It’s liminal space feel has caused some to relate to the saying, “every super Mario 64 game is personalized.” But, what if a game really DID change in subtle ways every time you played it? Well, that’s where SM64.Z64 comes in. A terrifying rom hack that I’ll be getting into today.

ah yes, missing waterfall is "lack of wind"
7:42 Yeah I don't like this, it takes away from the experince in some areas, I like the forshadowing you did as it did genuenly add the Unknown as a part of the Video, The extra effects you add does make the scare worse as it doesn't fit the atmosphere taking one away from the immmersion, leading to annoyance than Fear.
at 3:37 the rom hack also lacks the waterfall in the background
without the balls and there being fog the tower feels like it's infinite going up and up never ending

the way the video just cuts to put the fact that theres nothing else to the game bluntly, thats whats terrifying to me

WHY ROM?
the “something changed” reminds me of creep-p’s song of the same name. Which is also about a horror-esque version of a game. (although the song is specifically about help_tale, an alternate version of undertale)
Probably just a coincidence, but I’ve wasted years of my life on undertale-related media, and I need to justify that by acting like it means anything.
I think this hack represents how people slowly forget the game over time. Fear of forgetting is a powerful and exploitable fear, and when twisted correctly it can absolutely be used in this fashion. The end of it supports this, when the end of the hack shows everything back to normal, but it's missing the most important part: you, the player. You forget the game, so the game forgets you.
It's not the wind missing what you call Wind here is actually the sound of the rushing water from the waterfall…who is Missing too…

It wasn’t wind that was missing, the “wind” we heard was actually the waterfall to the left, and if you look at the comparison, you’ll see that the waterfall is gone!
