Greetings Indie Warriors and welcome to our review of River City Girls Zero on the Nintendo Switch. River City Girls Zero is a 16-bit beat-em-up from developers WayForward, Limited Run, and Technos. The game was published by WayForward. River City Girls Zero was originally released on the Super Famicom, marking this as the first time it has ever been officially playable in North America. The game will be released on PS4, PS5, Xbox, and PC later in 2022.

“Join Kunio, Riki, Misako, and Kyoko for bone-crunching, 16-bit, co-op beat-’em-up action – translated and released outside of Japan for the very first time! Experience the origin of the River City Girls story as the hot-blooded heroes attempt to clear their names of a heinous crime by uppercutting, spin-kicking, stomping, and slamming every thug and two-bit criminal that gets in their way! Rock the jailhouse, clean up the carnival, and raise hell on the highway! The original 1994 graphics, soundtrack, and gameplay are augmented with new opening and closing motion-comic cutscenes, a new animated intro, and additional music by Megan McDuffee and DEMONDICE. Discover River City’s past with this lost classic!”

  1. Will you be hitting the 16-bit streets? Thanks so much for supporting click-bait free independent content!

  2. To be honest I already played through this using a fan-translated ROM a couple years ago, but I'll support WayForward for giving the Kunio-kun series so much love. And I think we're ready for another entry in the Kunio or River City Girls games finally using HD sprites… I mean, those anime shorts and art look phenomenal, imagine an actual game like that.

  3. Those last few bosses made my controller fear for its life!

I was particularly surprised when I saw they kept the "Character has a gun which is basically an instant kill" thing from the original Nekketsu/Renegade game…

  4. Seems like a nice game for a see the origin story, not so much as a game of the ages. Which is fine, this game finally got officially translated, but did we “need” it if fan translations already existed? Nah not really. But looks alright enough might pick up the standard LRG the day before it ends

  5. 👍🙏🥲🤝😭🙏🙌
《熱血硬派》(Hot Blood Hardcore Band) = River City
    Asian name is better!!! 🤘😡
Play it on PS5 better!!! 🤘😡

  6. Glad to know it wasn’t just me having problems hit hit detection.

Single player has been a major slog. Getting combo-broken immediately after landing a hit on that same guy sucks.

  7. I got the game and the soundtrack yesterday and Megan gave me a huge thank you for buying her album of River City Girls Zero.

  8. It's good to know that it performs well on Switch, even if I don't really plan to play. It seems like a good one for those who enjoy the series or want the brawler from the classic era for the sake of having that bit of history. But I feel like it would frustrate me with the slower controls, but as always, this was another great review.
